Alberto Gonzales

U.S. Attorney General
(2005-2007)
White House Counsel
(2001-2005)

Alberto Gonzales was named counsel to President George W. Bush in January 2001. A member of the self-styled "War Council," Gonzales had been Bush's long-time legal arm. In Texas, he served as general counsel to then Governor Bush, as the Texas Secretary of State, and as a Justice of the state Supreme Court. In late 2004, the President nominated Gonzales to be Attorney General of the United States, a post from which he resigned in the face of allegations that nine U.S. Attorneys were fired by the Justice Department for partisan political reasons.
