Wilson, General Manager SUBJECT: DECLASSIFICATION POLICY At a meeting on June 5, 1947, the Commission considered your memorandum dated May 26, 1947, "Declassification Policy." The Commission approved as an interim policy recommendation 1, 2, and 4 of your memorandum. The Commission also approved as an interim policy the statement contained in subparagraph 3 (a) and, at the suggestion of the General Advisory Committee, modified the statement in subparagraph 3 (b) to read as follows: "The Commission re-affirms that for elements of atomic number 90 or above it wishes to retain classification on those aspects of their behavior under neutron bombardment, of their spontaneous fission, and of the number and energy of neutrons emitted in their fission which have a direct bearing on weapon or production information. The Commission approves the release of such data in these categories which do not have any bearing on weapon or production information." The Commission's approval of recommendation is limited to liaison with the British and Canadian authorities on declassification which will not involve supplying to the British or Canadians any restricted data not already known to them. s/ Carroll L.
