ATTACHMENT 1 Office Memorandum - UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO: Dr. C. L. Dunham, Deputy Director Division of Biology and Medicine, Washington, AEC July 13, 1955 FROM: Merril Eisenbud, Manager New York Operations Office SUBJECT: RESURVEYS OF THE MARSHALLS REFER TO SYMBOL: M:ME I would appreciate copies of whatever reports have been issued on resurveys of the Marshalls. At the moment I am wondering about Uterik now that the natives have been back on this atoll for some months. I should think that urine samples from them would be of some interest. We are sorely in need of data which would relate a given level of environmental contamination to absorption by a human population living in the environment. I realize the Uterik situation is quite atypical and that the factors governing uptake are complex and are numerous. However, the problem has great importance both to civil defense and industry. Initially, 24 hour collections from 4 or 5 individuals would suffice to determine if the levels are high enough to be of interest. It would be desirable to arrange for one or two control samples to be collected on Uterik perhaps from individuals visiting the atoll. 52219 OFFICE USE ONLY
