ATTACHMENT 12 BMM:HDB April 14, 1959 Dr. Robert A. Conard Pathology Division Medical Department Brookhaven National Laboratory Upton, L.I., New York Dear Bob: We are delighted to learn of your safe return and that the examination of the Marshallese went to so well. As I read your report I began to be worried for fear that the discontent of your natives with continued examinations would become a real problem but you seem to have managed the situation very well. It occurred to me to ask whether it might be possible to send each of these people some sort of a little trinket to indicate to them that you appreciated their cooperation and to say that you are looking forward to the same thing again next year. I don't know exactly what gift I had in mind, except perhaps something like these poppit beads, costume jewelry, barrettes, pocket knives, pictures, etc. I would be a good investment, I believe, if it is possible to manage administratively. I note from a copy of a TWX from CJTF SEVEN, Washington, D.C. that there will be a change in administration of the area as your letter indicated there would be. A copy of the body is included. Might I ask you to request a few copies of JTF-7 circular 380-1 for your use and ours? I noticed your report contained no information about the whole body counts of the people. I know it will take some time to get these data together but I would appreciate learning the general trend of your findings as soon as possible. They appreciate being informed that things went off well. Hoping to see you again. Sincerely yours, H.D.
