ATTACHMENT B Navy Research Proposal form Regarding Radiation Treatment Study Research Proposal Research Division --- 98 (Hev. 10/49) Project Number and Title (Leave number blank for new projects) NM 007 086 - Clinical studies at the U.S. Naval Hospital, St. Albans, New York. Study Number and Title NM 007 086.08 - Radiation treatment. Corelation or predisposition to radiation illness to other clinical findings in patients receiving radiation therapy; Location of Study Naval Hospital, St. Albans, Queens, N.Y. --- end Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, Md. Estimated Duration: Indefinite Operational Requirement Number: (Leave blank if undetermined): 16402 Security Classification: Unclassified (Recommended) Subjects to be used in study, if any (Certain studies using human subjects require Sector Approval - ---- obtains clearance) Routine Therapy Patients - To receive only those dosages indicated for disease in question Additional Funds, if any Requiring Bureau Allocation to Project in Present Fiscal Year: None Required Principal Investigator: CDR., S.F. Williams MC USN Consultants: F.P. Ellinger, MD, Chief Radiation Biologist, NMBI, Bethesda, MD ILLEGIBLE OBJECTIVES, AND EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN (continue on following page, if necessary) To investigate the factors responsible for the natural resistance of man to general and local effects of ionizing radiation. This study is supplementary to the investigations carried on by the Naval Hospital, Bethesda, and the Naval Medical Research Institute under the same title. Experimental Design: The occurrence of radiation sickness will be carefully observed in patients undergoing radiation therapy. Threshold dose levels of X-ray for the production of the various symptoms and changes will be determined with due consideration of field size of the irradiated area, over-all exposure time, section of the body and disease for which te patient has bee irradiated. Because of the well- known difficulties to ascertain symptoms of radiation sickness in patients, a special chart for daily recording of all pertinent data will be employed, similar to that in use at the Bethesda Naval Hospital. Correlation of these clinical data with urinary ILLEGIBLE excretion is contemplated for a later phase of this study.
