DISCLAIMER The following is a staff memorandum or other working document prepared for the members of the Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments. It should not be construed as representing the final conclusions of fact or interpretation of the issues. All staff memoranda are subject to revision based on further information and analysis. For conclusions and recommendations of the Advisory Committee, readers are advised to consult the Final Report to be published in 1995. STAFF MEMORANDUM TO: Members of the Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments FROM: Advisory Committee Staff DATE: June 27, 1994 RE: Transcripts of Selected Interviews Conducted by J. Newell Stannard When writing his book, Radioactivity and Health: A History, J. Newell Stannard conducted a large number of interviews, which were transcribed. Because the book was written under a contract with the Department of Energy, DOE has copies of the transcripts. The staff requested copies of the transcripts and is in the process of reviewing them. We have attached a copy of one of the transcripts to (1) give the Committee a sense of the type of information that can be gleaned from them, and (2) allow the Committee to assess the value of such information. Attached you will find: 1. Appendix A to Stannard's book, which describes the interview process and lists all of the interviews. 2. A transcript of an interview with Stafford Warren who was the former Medical Director of the Manhattan Project and Emeritus Dean of UCLA Medical Center, and who worked in the Laboratory of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Biology at UCLA. The February 2, 1979 interview includes transcript discussions of Manhattan Project problems, the Pacific testing, the dial painters, Oak Ridge, plutonium, uranium and other internal emitter work, as well as other topics. Please contact us if you would like to review any of the other interview transcripts listed in the Stannard Appendix, and we will forward them to you. In addition to the Stannard interviews, the staff is now in the process of compiling a list of prominent researchers to whom the Committee may wish to talk or whose collected papers the Committee may wish to examine.
