Attachment 4 Description of Radio Lanthanum (RaLa) Experiment Description of Radio Lanthanum (RaLa) Experiment, John Taschner, April 12, 1994. Team Lead: ____________________ Date: ____________________ Name of Experiment Radio Lanthanum (RaLa) Description: The RaLa experiments were an open air, high explosive testing program involving La140. There were about 254 experiments conducted between 1944 and 1962. The area was vacated and cleaned up in 1963. In 1950 the Air Force through their Cambridge Research Laboratory conducted some atmospheric electrical conductivity tests in the vicinity of Los Alamos as add-on-experiments to a few RaLa experiments. Date and Investigator(s): RaLa experiments were conducted by a series of Los Alamos operating groups from 1944 through 1962. Location: Experiments were carried out in Technical Area 10 in Bayo Canyon about two miles east of Los Alamos. Source of Information: Reports and files are in several locations, primarily in Los Alamos. Related reports and memos are interspersed among other subjects in numerous operating groups' files. Volume of Records: It is estimated that there maybe as many as sixty (60) cubic feet of files containing approximately three thousand (3000) documents will be reviewed for relevant information. Other sites with Records or Involvement in Study: Perhaps some files at DOE/AL and the Air Force (Cambridge Laboratory).
