DRAFT TAB E MEMORANDUM TO: Members of the Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments FROM: Advisory Committee Staff DATE: December 5, 1994 RE: Richland/Hanford Site Visit On November 22, members of the Committee and some staff attended a series of briefings at Hanford. Michele Stenhjem Gerber is a historian who works for Westinghouse and author of "On the Home Front: The Cold War Legacy of the Hanford Nuclear Site." She described the layout and function of the facilities at Hanford and escorted the group to the T Plant where the Green Run was conducted in 1949. Bruce Napier of the Hanford Environmental Dose Reconstruction (HEDR) Project provided a briefing on the Hanford dose reconstruction. He noted that the daily production records and hourly meteorological readings allowed a fairly complete reconstruction of the environmental fate of released radionuclides. Levels of human exposure depended on knowledge of dietary and other habits. The HEDR project has produced maps of typical exposures as well as specific exposure estimates for numerous individuals. Mr. Napier noted that the HEDR document search process over a number of years led to some improvements in the control of the Hanford document collections. The Hanford search team also briefed members on their efforts. Advisory Committee members questioned the Hanford representatives about the search and raised questions about how to guarantee the thoroughness and credibility of the search process. Ron Kathren briefed members on the Uranium and Transuranic registries. Advisory Committee members questioned him about consent requirements and outlined the concerns expressed before the Advisory Committee by citizens.
